Want a framework for designing the perfect homepage?
To add your portfolio, head to Website and select the + icon. From the drop down menu that appears select Portfolio (found in the collections category) and choose which layout design you want to use.
Once you’ve given your portfolio page a name and added it to your website you can head to your edit dashboard and begin editing the portfolio.
If you select Edit Section you’ll be able to choose what style of hover effect you want to use, personally I like to use Grid Overlay. Here you can also choose how you want your portfolio images to be cropped on the main portfolio page (e.g. square) and your text alignment.
Once you’ve added your portfolio page and got the settings how you want them, you can begin adding your portfolio items. Now this is the big downside to Squarespace portfolios because you can’t save a portfolio item as a draft.
Once you hit save, it will publish it straight away on your website, not ideal if you want to work on your portfolio over time and don’t want to set it live straight away.
This is why I often sway towards creating a portfolio using a blog collection, as it gives you more control over not just how many items you can include, but when you set them live.
Back to portfolios though, editing a portfolio item is just like editing any Squarespace page and you’ll have all the sections and blocks available to you. Great!
There are definite pros and cons to using a portfolio page and you’ll need to weigh them up in order to decide if it’s the right choice for your website.
