Rename Assets in Squarespace Asset Library

Renaming images in Squarespace used to be a huge hassle. If you’ve been using the platform for a while, you probably remember the old workaround:

Either rename the file before uploading it or painfully hunt through your pages and rename each image manually.

Then Squarespace let us rename them, but only if you clicked into each image individually. Tedious? Yes. Efficient? Not even close.

But now? Squarespace has made life so much easier with a feature tucked inside something called the Asset Library. If you're not using this already, you're missing out on a major time-saver.

What Is the Asset Library?

The Asset Library is a central place within your Squarespace site that stores all your uploaded images and files. It’s kind of like your site’s personal media hub; and now, it allows you to rename images directly without having to dig through every individual page or section.

How to Rename Images in Squarespace (The Easy Way)

Here’s how to rename your images using the Asset Library:

  1. Log in to your Squarespace site.

  2. In the left-hand menu, go to Website > Files or Assets (depending on your version).

  3. You’ll see a list of all your uploaded images in the Asset Library.

  4. Find the image you want to rename — many will have weird file names like IMG_3829.jpg.

  5. Click the three dots next to the image.

  6. Select Rename, then type your new name (like leaf-shadows-cream.jpg or lash-lines.jpg).

  7. Hit Save and you’re all done.

That’s it. Rename as many images as you like in one place. No need to click into individual pages or manually re-upload renamed files.
