How To Migrate Your Squarespace Website From 7.0 to 7.1 [FULL MIGRATION GUIDE]

If your website is hosted on Squarespace 7.0 but you want to migrate it to Squarespace 7.1 then I have good news.

There’s finally a comprehensive migration path to complete the update, meaning you no longer need to do it manually. Hurrah!

The new version update tool allows you to migrate your website without losing your data and SEO. Whilst the tool isn’t perfect (yet) and you will need to manually check for errors once your migration is complete, this is a total game changer for those with Squarespace 7.0 websites.

Framework for designing a perfect homepage

Want a framework for designing the perfect homepage?

First things first, you need to have three versions of your website. Yes, three!

You need your main, live version of the site, a duplicate to practice on and a third duplicate to act as a backup.

Having these backups allows you to keep your main site live, gives you a version to practice on and gives you a backup should something go wrong.

The last thing you want to do is to go in and migrate the main and only version of your website to 7.1, only to discover that you don’t actually like or want the update.

This way, you can practice on your version 2 and if you like it, you can apply the changes to your main version 1.

You also need to ensure that the website you want to migrate is using a template in the Brine of Bedford family. The migration tool will only work on these two families.

Before you make your duplicates you need to turn off Developer Mode. To do this head to Settings > Developer Tools > Developer Mode and make sure this is toggled off.

Turn off developing mode

To make your duplicates head to your Squarespace dashboard and click the three dots next to your website. Hit Duplicate Website and wait for the duplication to finish. You need to complete these twice to provide yourself with two duplicates.

Make a copy of your website

Within one of your duplicates head to Website > Design > Update to Version 7.1 and click Get Started.

Update your site to new version

You can then preview the changes and go through each of your web pages to check you’re happy with all of the edits that have been made to your website.

Be sure to check not only the design of each page but also your URL slugs, SEO page descriptions, and each of your blog posts.

Once you’re happy you can click publish and your changes will be made and you’ll have migrated the duplicated version of your Squarespace website to 7.1.

Publish your updated site

If you ARE happy with 7.1, you can then complete the process again for your main live website. If you’re not happy with it, you can delete the duplicate and continue living your best life on 7.0.

Remember, this is a permanent update so once you’ve made the changes to your main website, there’s no going back.

And that’s it, a really great update from Squarespace allowing you to easily migrate from Squarespace 7.0 to Squarespace 7.1.
