Adding background colours to a text block on Squarespace

Squarespace have been making rafts of small scale changes to their platform recently and it’s a huge win for all of us who use their CMS to build with. One of these iterative improvements is the ability to add coloured backgrounds to text blocks.

It completely does away with the need for coding, which used to be the case and could get very messy if you planned to use the effect en masse.

Before, if we wanted to add a background to a text block on Squarespace, we would have to use CSS. Even for those with coding experience, it can still be a bit of a challenge, and it would be even harder for those who aren't as familiar with code (or for designers working with clients with zero coding skills). But with this new update, all we have to do to add background to a text block is simply click a toggle.

To add the background to the text block, we just toggle the "background" option by first clicking the pen icon that appears when you have clicked your desired text block once.

You can also add a border radius or change the padding to customize the appearance of the background. And if you want to change the colour of the background or text, simply head to “Design > Site Styles > Colors” and then pick your desired palette.

This update makes it much easier to add and customise backgrounds to text blocks. Whilst it's a small change, it’s one that can make a big difference, and it's just one of the many updates that Squarespace has been rolling out to make their platform more user-friendly and feature-rich.
